School of Software Engineering
School of Software Engineering (SSE) of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is one of the thirty-five pioneer software engineering institutes founded in 2001 to meet the industry's demand for software professionals with a bachelor or master's degree in software engineering.
The mission of SSE goes beyond meeting the needs of industry and aims to produce graduate level IT professionals that are potential leaders in the software industry. This mission is fulfilled by motivating the students to innovatively apply software engineering processes and methodologies to solve real-world application problems. Through this application-driven approach, students obtain a solid understanding of the theoretical foundation of software engineering, which is important for the student's long-term growth.
At present, academician Guoliang Chen is the dean of SSE. The executive dean is Dr. Xuehai Zhou, and associate deans Mr. Min Wu.and Dr. Xi Li.
SSE has two academic departments: the Department of Software Technologies and the Department of Embedded Systems. There are more than 84 faculty members, all of them have a Ph.D./MS degree, or are a Ph.D. supervisor. Approximately one third of the faculty members are full time, one third are adjunct faculty from the Computer Science Department of USTC, and one third from industry or oversea institutions. For more information, please visit our website: www.sse.ustc.edu.cn
Currently, 1,650 full-time students are enrolled at SSE, a seven fold jump from eight years ago. Most of the increase occurred during the last two years, reflecting the market trend and the acceptance of the degree. Working professionals or part-time students can enroll in courses that are taught during the weekends. Normally, a full-time student is expected to graduate in two and a half of a year and a part-time student in three years.
SSE has two campuses. The Hefei campus, located in Hefei, Anhui Province, is within USTC and occupies an entire building of 6,500 square meters or 58,500 square feet of classroom, laboratory and office spaces. The Suzhou campus also occupies an entire building of 12,000 square meters or 108,000 square feet. It is located in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, which is about 30 minutes travel time to Shanghai.
All classrooms and laboratories of SSE are equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment and are more than adequate to serve the faculty and students. Two distance learning systems enable students to take courses from a remote site, or listen to courses taught at an oversea institution. SSE collaborates with numerous nationally and internationally famous firms and universities to provide a wide variety of internship opportunities to the students. In addition, while taking courses at SSE, the students can work with software engineers at the Software Engineering Center, jointly established and operated by SSE and iFlyTek Inc., which is internationally known for its leading voice recognition products.
